The Minnesota Wild have signed Dean Evason to a two-year contract to remain the team's head coach, said general manager Bill Guerin.

“I am very excited to announce that Dean Evason is our full-time head coach,” said Guerin. “Dean has done a fantastic job as our interim head coach and deserves this opportunity. I look forward to watching our team under his leadership going forward.”

Evason was named the team's interim head coach back on Feb. 14. The team went 8-4-0 during his short tenure. Although new to the head coaching role for the Wild, he has been with the team since June 6, 2018, when he was named as an assistant coach. Prior to that, he had spent six seasons as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL, where he led the team to a 242-161-53 record. He has also spent time as an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals.

Evason and the Wild players are set to begin playoffs in just over two weeks' time, where they will take on the Vancouver Canucks in a five-game series. Despite missing the final wild card position by a single point, they were included in the postseason due to the NHL having 24 teams compete in this year's playoffs, as the season was forced to end early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
