Ivanyuzhenkov, an enforcer-type who once led Russia's MHL (juniors) in penalty minutes and racked up over 250 PIMs in two seasons in the USHL, was behind the wheel of a BMW X6 registered to his mother in his hometown of Podolsk, Russia, when an as-yet unidentified 45-year-old man on a bicycle cut in front of him, and he did not have sufficient time to hit the brakes. According to the police reports, the victim died at the scene from his injuries.
Though it does not seem that this will be viewed as a criminal matter, it is worthwhile to note that in 2016, Artyom's older brother Anton was involved in an accident in the same car, when he jumped the curb and injured some bystanders. Criminal charges were dropped as the accident was ruled to have resulted from a flat tire and the injured people were compensated.
It is also notable that Artyom is the son of Boris Ivanyuzhenkov, a former member of the Russian Duma (Parliament) and at one point, the country's Minister of Sport and Tourism from 1999 to 2000.
Artyom had spent the last year in the US, having played for the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL, as well as Orlando Solar Bears and Norfolk Admirals of the ECHL.
