Major twist shakes up Edmonton Oilers head coach position
Darren Dreger just poured cold water on the Bruce Cassidy to Edmonton rumor. If the Oilers thought he was clearly better than Kris Knoblauch, the move would be done already.
That was Dreger's read on Yeg Sports Talk Monday afternoon, and it lands like a verdict.
The Oilers are not rushing into a coaching change. According to Dreger, the front office is reviewing the entire structure, not just the bench.
That includes general manager Stan Bowman, assistant GM Keith Gretzky, and CEO Jeff Jackson. The whole hockey ops chain is under the microscope.
And honestly? That's a much bigger problem than swapping coaches.

Edmonton finished 41-30-11 for 93 points, 14th overall in the league. The Pacific Division runner-up tag does not hide a -13 goal differential being closer to the bubble than the elite.
Then came Anaheim. The Oilers dropped the first-round series in six games to the Ducks, a result that would have been unthinkable in October.
What the Stan Bowman review really means for Edmonton
McDavid posted 138 points in 82 games, then went minus-8 in the playoffs with one goal. Six games. One goal. Let that sit for a minute.
Leon Draisaitl finished with 97 points in 65 regular season games and added 10 points in the six-game loss. The supporting cast around the stars cratered when it mattered.
Evan Bouchard delivered a 95-point campaign from the blue line. He still went minus-7 across the playoff run. The defensive structure broke down in ways a coaching change alone cannot fix.
This is where Dreger's reporting cuts deepest. If a clean Cassidy hire was the answer, ownership would already be holding the press conference.
Instead, the Oilers are asking whether the architect, Bowman, deserves to keep building. Whether Jackson's vision still fits. Whether the entire decision-making structure failed McDavid's prime year after year.
Knoblauch survives the day, but not because anyone gave him a vote of confidence. He survives because the Oilers are not ready to name his replacement yet.
That's the part nobody in Edmonton wants to sit with.
