"The National Hockey League declined comment, citing its policy regarding COVID-19 disclosure. The Canadiens also declined to comment," wrote Athletic reporter Arpon Basu in his article.
Players have until 5 pm ET on Monday to opt out of the NHL's 24-team Return to Play format. So far, Habs defenceman Karl Alzner has exercised that option, while forward Max Domi is waiting seven to 10 days to make a determination. Domi has Type 1 diabetes which makes him susceptible to further complications should he contract the coronavirus.
"Considering Max's health condition (Type 1 diabetes), both parties have agreed to take this responsible approach and to take this time to evaluate the ongoing situation, in order to make the best decision for Max's health at the end of this period,” general manager Marc Bergevin said Sunday in a statement.
Other players that have opted out include Calgary's Travis Hamonic, Pittsburgh's Zach Trotman, Edmonton's Mike Green, Vancouver's Sven Beartschi, Roman Polak of the Dallas Stars and Boston's Steven Kampfer. In most cases, there is an underlying condition or the underlying condition of a family member that is causing the player to exercise the opt-out clause.
