You can't be blamed if you find this one a bit of a surprise, but a report claims the Vancouver Canucks are exploring the possibility to trading one of their key players. According to Matt Sekeres, who hosts the afternoon drive on TSN 1040, the team is looking into the possibility of a deal for winger and former first-round draft pick brock Boeser.

Sekeres made the revelation Friday while appearing on his show alongside Rick Dhaliwal.

Boeser was selected 23rd overall by the Canucks in 2015. He's played a total of 197 games in the NHL since then, amassing 75 goals and 161 points. In 2017-18, he managed 29 goals in 62 games, a career high. The next season he put up 56 points, another career high.

It may seem strange that the Canucks would consider trading a 23-year-old budding star and someone who appears to be a key piece in a team attempting to find its way to being a contender. However, it is worth noting that Vancouver is currently loaded on the wing and the team is very close to the cap limit with a hit of $3.03 million this season and the next two due to a recapture penalty that was incurred when Roberto Luongo decided to retire. Boeser is currently making $5.785 million per season until the end of 2021-22. He will still be a restricted free agent when his latest contract runs out, but it stands to reason that he'll be in line for a raise should he continue on his current pace.
