BREAKING - Former Consultant Sues NHLPA for $100M

Per TSN's Rick Westhead, former NHLPA consultant Richard Rodier filed a $100M lawsuit against the NHL's Players' Association for - basically - manipulating data, which allowed the NHL to pay players less money. Allegedly.

Westhead writes, "Under the NHL and NHLPA's collective bargaining agreement, players receive 50 per cent of the league's overall revenue, known as HRR. Rodier has previously alleged that the union's executive director, Donald Fehr, did not inform players about several cases where teams were potentially misreporting revenue."

The NHLPA responded, denying the veracity of Rodier's claims, which is entirely unsurprising. Rodier was staffed by the NHLPA from 2011-2015, although he consulted the association through 2018.

The NHLPA responded: "We are aware of the lawsuit filed by Mr. Rodier,» an NHLPA spokesman wrote in an email to TSN. «It is wholly without merit, and we will fully defend the matter."

Westhead also reports that Rodier had assisted in building a 2011 lawsuit against the NHL, which alleged that three clubs - Nashville, Washington, and Arizona - misrepresented revenue.

"During his first year with the NHLPA in 2011, Rodier helped build a case for filing $110 million worth of claims against the NHL hockey revenue allegedly misreported by Washington, Nashville and Arizona, sources previously told TSN. The NHL and NHLPA settled those particular claims for $40 million, the sources said."

This story is chock-full of legal jargon and intricate details with which only lawyers and accountants can keep up. But to the Layman, select NHL clubs have - allegedly - misrepresented revenue data for the purpose of underpaying players.

Which - given the shadiness with which the NHL so often acts - would not exactly be a shock to anyone. Whether or not Rodier's claims hold water is for the courts to decide, but he does have a successful track record in this regard.
