The NHL's worst kept secret of the last month or so was officially confirmed on Saturday night as it was revealed that the Edmonton Oilers will host the Calgary Flames in the 2023 Heritage Classic.

The game will be played on Sunday, October 29th at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. This year's game will mark the 20th anniversary of the NHL's first regular season outdoor game, which saw the Oilers host Montreal at the same venue.

"To play an outdoor game in Edmonton, at Commonwealth, to play Calgary on the 20th anniversary of the last one, super special," Oilers captain Connor McDavid said.

Meanwhile, Flames forward Elias Lindholm said, "It'll be fun. I was part of one against Winnipeg and played one back in Sweden, too. It's always fun to go back to your roots and be outdoors and stuff like that. It's always nice when we play Edmonton as well. We're excited."

The 2023 Heritage Classic marks the first time that the 'Battle of Alberta' will be played outdoors, but both teams are no stranger to playing in one of the NHL's marquee events.

Edmonton has played in two Heritage Classic's, losing to Montreal in 2003 and defeating Winnipeg in 2016. As for Calgary, they've also participated in a pair of Heritage Classic's. Their first game in 2011 as they hosted, and defeated the Montreal Canadiens, while their second game was in 2019 and they lost to the Winnipeg Jets.
