Sean Day, one of just seven players ever to be granted exceptional status in order to play in the CHL as a 15-year-old, has been placed on unconditional waivers by the New York Rangers. Now 22, Day's professional career has not unfolded the way he or the Rangers would have thought when he was drafted in the third round in 2016.

Despite being a year younger than all of his counterparts, Day was drafted fourth overall by the Mississauga Steelheads in the OHL Priority Draft in 2013. However, he did not dominate the league as many had expected, and was chosen 81st overall in the NHL entry draft by the Rangers. Day turned pro in 2018 but has spent his time split between the ECHL's Maine Mariners and AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack. He's managed 18 points in 62 career games in the AHL.

There's no word on whether Day requested to be released by the Rangers, or whether this was a mutual agreement to terminate his deal. Day had one year remaining on his entry-level contract. The only other players to be granted exceptional status in the CHL are John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, Connor McDavid, Joe Veleno, Shane Wright, and Connor Bedard.

Once he clears waivers, Day will be a free agent. He could make an interesting reclamation project for a team willing to take him on. However, it remains to be seen whether anyone is willing to take that chance.
