David Quinn, head coach of the New York Rangers, seems to have had enough of people calling the NHL's upcoming 24-team playoff format unfair. When asked about it while appearing on "Home Ice", Quinn made it very clear what he considers unfair during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think we all have to be very careful when we talk about fair," Quinn said. "When I think about fair right now, I think about the 100,000 people who have lost their lives, and their loved ones who have been affected by it. I think about the first responders who have been exposed to this terrible disease, mentally and physically. I think about the 30, 40 million people who have filed for unemployment. I think about the small and big businesses that have been shut down. I think about the seniors that are in high school and college that will never experience one of life's great moment. I think we all have to be very sensitive to the word fair."

"We are very fortunate that we continue to play a game that we love and coach a game that we love," Quinn added. "I understand fairness in the small context of our sport, but I believe we all have to keep the word fair in perspective."

The Carolina Hurricanes, who will have to face the New York Rangers in the first round play-in, have stated the format the NHL has approved is unfair and the team went as far as to vote against it. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Canes attempted a proposal that would have forced the Rangers to have to win four games of their best-of-five series in order to advance to the net round, while Carolina would only have to win two (you can read the story here.). That proposal was rejected by the league.

"What did we grind for? The bulk of the season was completed, and they just threw that out, and I think that's how (the Hurricanes) felt," stated head coach Rod Brind'Amour. "I think that's justifiable in a way."
