The New York Rangers' Kaapo Kakko has type-1 diabetes and celiac disease. That puts him in a risk group, and means he could miss the Stanley Cup playoffs.

On Thursday, on a Zoom call with the New York Post amongst other reporters, the Rangers president John Davidson said that there had been extensive discussion internally regarding the best way to handle Kakko's situation when the NHL returns.

“I know that he's skating and working out like mad man to try to get ready to come back. I'm sure he's going to want to play, but at the same time, again, it's important for everybody to be taken care of regarding their health.” Stevenson continued:

“It doesn't matter if you're a 19-year-old young player or if you're an older executive. Everything has to be done in the right fashion.”

The New York Rangers will face Carolina in the play-in round, which will be the first step in the playoffs. If Kakko were to be unable to participate, it would certainly be disappointing for the Rangers to have one of the core players of the future miss out on valuable experience. Kakko finished the regular season with 23 points in 66 games.
