No future for Radko Gudas in Washington

Radko Gudas is in the final year of his $13.4 million, four-year contract and anticipates his time with the Capitals will be short-lived. He voiced his opinion on continuing the 2019-20 season and predicted what is in store for him next season. His interview, which was conducted in Czech, aired on ČT Sport and was translated into English by Alexandra Petakova of RMNB.

Gudas expressed vehement opposition to returning from the coronavirus pause this season. His concern is not only for the physical health of the players, but also for their mental health. He believes that being quarantined in a hotel would have negative consequences for the team's psyche. He commented on the fact that if athletes are not able to compete in the Olympics, they should not be able to play in the NHL either.

“Money is money, it's what currently makes the world go round,” Gudas noted. “It's a bit sad that they are willing to risk the health of so many players for money.”

While on the subject of money, Gudas discussed his contract and where he pictures himself next season. Gudas was acquired by the Capitals in 2019 in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers for Matt Niskanen. He is currently making $3.35 million annually from a contract that he signed in 2016, which is set to end this year. He considered that the Capitals would be more likely to sign younger players due to the challenges presented by the salary cap. When asked if he thought that it was possible that he would re-sign with Washington he said, “I think there's no chance.”

Gudas predicts that he is not the only player preparing to leave the Capitals. “I think a lot of the guys with contracts about to expire will leave Washington,” Gudas said.

Gudas plans to stay in the NHL and thinks that there are teams out there in need of his defensive skills. For now, he is hoping to see the coronavirus pause continue and is waiting on the free agency market to open.
