There were some raised eyebrows and a lot of laughter earlier this week when a report linked disgraced former Edmonton and Boston GM Peter Chiarelli to the Arizona Coyotes. Arizona President and CEO Ahron Cohen left the team, and the speculation began immediately that the Coyotes were eyeing Chiarelli as a possible replacement.

It seemed to start with Steve Simmonds of the Toronto Sun, who write in a recent article "An old rumour now circulating again: Are the Arizona Coyotes considering bringing in Peter Chiarelli in a senior position above GM John Chayka."

In his recent "Coyotes Monthly Mailbag" column for The Athletic, Craig Morgan throws cold water on the speculation in a very brief statement. Morgan put out a call for questions on Twitter shortly after he revealed that Cohen has left the team and, understandably, a lot of the questions he received dealt with that topic, including "Does the ousting of Cohen mean Chiarelli is coming?" with follow-ups dealing with who he might bring with him if he were. Here's Morgan's response:

"I don't think Chiarelli will be joining the organization, which should answer the remainder of your questions."

Chiarelli's time with Edmonton, as most hockey fans know, was considered a disaster, with several questionable (if not downright terrible) trades and signings. As for Steve Simmonds, there's no doubt he can sometimes be right. He can also throw out some wild speculation and statements that are just plain wrong. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Morgan's statement here.
