New Jersey Devils forward Nico Hischier has started his military training in Switzerland. He is currently participating in the “Rekrutenschule,” which is basic training for the Swiss Armed Forces.

Military service is compulsory for male Swiss citizens with a few exceptions. One exemption is for Swiss citizens who live abroad, as Hischier has been. He refused to use this exemption and volunteered to fulfill his civic duty.

In June 2019, Hischier began the recruitment process in Sumiswald, Switzerland. He was joined by Devils goalie prospect, Gilles Senn. They underwent a thorough psychological assessment, medical examination, and physical assessment.

He spoke with the Swiss Defense Communications and said, “It brings you down to earth and prepares you for life. We learn things that help us on a personal level.”
