Former NHLer Ales Hemsky announced his retirement in an article released by The Athletic Thursday afternoon.

Hemsky hasn't played professional hockey since the 2017-18 season when he was with the Montreal Canadiens. He was limited to just seven games that season due to a concussion, which ended up costing him his career.

“I'm doing well,” said Hemsky. “It took me a year and a half or two years to get over that concussion. I was hoping I could come back or play somewhere in Europe. But my hips didn't help either. I realized it's probably time to enjoy my kids. The doctors were saying I shouldn't play anymore. It took me a long time to get peace with that. It's hard when you do something for so long. You know you can play somewhere, but you can't. That's the hard part.”

Hemsky's entire career was filled with injuries, however when he was healthy he was extremely dominant at times. The Czech forward had his best seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, who he played 652 games with, putting up 477 points. His final career stats ended with him suiting up for 845 games, posting 174 goals and 572 points.
