According to Edmonton Oilers reporter Mark Spector, the Oilers are looking to re-sign several players who are pending free agents. Spector mentioned that in particular they are looking to give extensions to Mike Smith, Tyler Ennis, Riley Sheahan, Patrick Russell, and possibly Mike Green.

These deals would all make sense for general manager Ken Holland to do, as these players provided the Oilers with solid depth this year which was a big reason they were sitting second in the Pacific Division prior to the league being suspended. Smith was brought in as a free agent this summer on a one-year deal. Despite starting off very poorly, he rebounded in a big way during the second half of the season and had become the team's starting netminder.

Sheahan, like Smith, was brought in on a one-year deal. He has been a big part of the reason the Oilers penalty kill was ranked first in the entire NHL this season. Both Ennis and Green were brought in at the deadline. Neither got much of a chance to showcase themselves as Green got hurt early on and the league was suspended soon afterward. Russell surprised a lot of people when he made the team out of camp, as he was originally thought of as organizational depth.

Holland has done a good job since coming to the Oilers with improving their depth. Given the tight salary cap situation he came into, he brought in the players listed above and they all worked out quite well. It will be interesting to see if he is able to do the same for the 2020-21 Oilers roster.
