Makar viewed as Calder favorite over Hughes by opponents

Defencemen Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks have had phenomenal rookie seasons for their respective clubs. In almost any other year they would both win the Calder Trophy, given to the league's top rookie, in a landslide. However, because they both arrived in the league at the same time, only one will be able to win, which has drawn many debates from fans.

From a statistical standpoint it has been fairly even, with a slight edge going to Makar. Makar, 21, has 12 goals and 50 points through 57 games this season, while Hughes, 20, has eight goals and 53 points through 68 games played. While Canucks fans may disagree, players around the league seem to believe Makar is more deserving of the award.

“I'd go with Makar,” said Vegas Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault. “I think Makar is surrounded by a slightly better team, but he's proven himself. Quinn also has a good team around him, but this year I'd go with Makar.”

Chicago Blackhawks rookie forward Dominik Kubalik, who has 30 goals on the season, said that if he couldn't vote for himself, he'd also vote for Makar.

“A defenceman to run the power play, very skilled, great shot,” Kubalik said. “I like his play a lot.”

Florida Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau also said Makar would be his choice, comparing the young defenceman to his current teammate Aaron Ekblad and Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid.

“The two of them are right-handed shots and have a bit of the same style,” Huberdeau said. “Cale is definitely a gifted player, he's like a defensive version of McDavid.”

From a statistical look, it appears likely that Makar will win the award over Hughes. However, if the season were to return and Hughes had a great ending to the season, that could change voters' opinions. Regardless of who wins this event, these two defencemen will be terrific to watch for years and years to come.
