San Jose Sharks Reportedly Shopping One of Their Three Goaltenders

The San Jose Sharks look to be shopping one of their three goaltenders, looking to take advantage of a seller's goalie market. There are several teams out there desperate for goaltending help, and the Sharks aren't in need of three goaltenders. They also have the highest rated goaltending prospect pool according to Hockey Prospecting's Byron Bader, making it more likely than not they move one of their goaltenders.

According to Sheng Peng of NBC Sports California, the Sharks plan on riding Kaapo Kahkonen as their starting goaltender for 2022-23. This leaves either James Reimer or Adin Hill on GM Mike Grier's trading block.

Peng suggests a number of teams who could have interest. Of those mentioned, the Vegas Golden Knights and Philadelphia Flyers stand out to me. They both need an NHL goalie due to two varying yet equally depressing reasons; Vegas recently learned Robin Lehner will miss the entire 2022-23 season and Philadelphia's plan for a backup were vetoed by the Russian government.

As far as gauged interest, Peng believes Reimer could net the Sharks a 2nd round pick, while Hill might net a 4th rounder given his injury history.

Those prices sound about right, but Mike Grier could probably squeeze a decent return out of Reimer, he is quietly a high-quality goaltender.

The Sharks are $1.2 million over the salary cap, but they have $5.5 million eligible for LTIR, which would give them just over $4 million at the start of the season, barring any moves between now and then. Both goalies make just over $2 million per year, making each of them seriously valuable to teams like Vegas and Philly.

Grier is free of any time constraint, as the ball is in his court on this one. If a team needs a goalie, they will have to pay the price. Smart business, as San Jose transitions into a new era.
