Shawn Horcoff now holds Detroit's roster controls as head coach Todd McLellan prepares the Red Wings for a season carrying major pressure.
Detroit named Horcoff interim general manager Tuesday, giving him authority over day-to-day roster decisions, the salary cap and hockey operations personnel. He'll report directly to Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch.
The move puts a familiar face in charge while Detroit continues searching for its permanent hockey operations leader. Horcoff remains under consideration for that position.
For McLellan, the arrangement provides clarity entering camp. Rather than operate with uncertainty above the bench, Detroit now has a designated decision-maker capable of handling moves affecting the NHL roster.
Ilitch made the authority attached to Horcoff's new role clear, saying, “Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”

That matters because Horcoff isn't stepping into an unfamiliar room. He previously served as Detroit's assistant general manager while also running the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Steve Yzerman moves into advisory role
The bigger development involves Steve Yzerman. Detroit announced that Yzerman will transition into a senior advisor role to Ilitch after leading the Red Wings' hockey operations since 2019.
Detroit tied the change to its review following the end of last season, saying the organization determined a new direction was needed while maintaining continuity through the offseason.
Horcoff, 47, has deep organizational experience. Before becoming assistant GM in 2022, he spent six seasons overseeing player development and three more as assistant director of player personnel.
He also brings extensive NHL experience from his playing days, giving Detroit an executive who understands both the front-office side and the demands inside an NHL locker room.
The timing raises the stakes. Training camp is beginning, roster decisions are coming quickly and Horcoff now has full authority to make them while Detroit continues its broader search.
For McLellan and his players, there's no longer uncertainty about who has the final word. Horcoff has the chair, and what he does with it could determine whether the interim label disappears.
