According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the San Jose Sharks have traded defenceman Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes. Along with Burns, Lane Pederson is going to the Hurricanes in exchange for Steven Lorentz, goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional third round pick in 2023. LeBrun adds that the Sharks are retaining 33% of Burns' contract.
The Barrie (Ontario) native has three years remaining on his contract. It includes a modified no trade clause which involves a three-team no-trade list. Although Burns' cap hit is $8 million per season, his total salary for the 2022-23 season is $6.5 million. His total salary for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons is $5 million.
In 798 career games with the San Jose Sharks in eleven years, Burns had 594 points (172 goals, 422 assists), 438 penalty minutes and was a minus-thirteen. Burns helped the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2016.
