The Swedish Ice Hockey Association, which is the governing body for all professional leagues in Sweden, has made the call to cancel the 2019-20 season due to concerns over COVID-19. This includes the country's top-tier league, the SHL

SHL players and clubs actually requested that the season be cancelled, citing concerns over the health of players, staff, officials and fans, although games had already been taking place without spectators. The governing body decided to grant the request early Sunday morning.

In a release, the SIHA noted that no relegation or promotion of teams between leagues will take place this season and no championships will be awarded for 2019-20.

The move follows the cancellation of the season from several other European leagues. The KHL, based in Russia, continues to play playoff games without spectators, with the next round slated to begin on Tuesday. Jokerit, based in Finland, has announced it is withdrawing from the KHL playoffs, giving its opponent, SKA St. Petersburg, an automatic bye to the next round.
