Bad news for Stan Bowman: it's now over for Oilers' top coaching candidate
The Edmonton Oilers coaching search just hit a wall, and Bruce Cassidy is the name slipping off Stan Bowman's whiteboard.
David Pagnotta dropped the update Tuesday night on Inside Sports, and the wording was blunt.
"It's starting to seem less and less likely that Bruce Cassidy will be available to interview."

That's not nothing. Cassidy was viewed inside the industry as the highest-upside name Edmonton could realistically chase this spring.
A Stanley Cup pedigree. A defensive structure Edmonton has been begging for. And a coach who has actually beaten Connor McDavid in a playoff series.
Bowman now has to pivot. Fast.

The vacancy isn't a luxury problem. The Oilers went 41-30-11 for 93 points, finished 14th overall, and were bounced by Anaheim in six games in the opening round.
A team built around a generational core does not get to spend a summer browsing.
And the Pacific just got harder. John Tortorella took over in Vegas on March 29. Anaheim, the team that just buried Edmonton, is back with Joel Quenneville.
Bowman inherited a roster designed to win now. The 282 goals scored prove the front end still hums. The 269 goals against tell you exactly why the bench needs an answer.
Cassidy would have been that answer. If the door is closing, the next tier of names becomes a real conversation, not a backup plan.

The Pacific isn't going to wait. Neither is McDavid's contract clock.
Edmonton's home record sat at 22-14-5. The road number was 19-16-6. Neither screams contender, and both land squarely on whoever walks into that office next.
If Cassidy is truly off the board, the pressure on the next hire goes up, not down. Because the fan base just watched the dream candidate walk past the window.
