Mikko Rantanen is trading in his hockey uniform for military fatigues this summer (and perhaps the next two as well).
The 23-year-old Finn has yet to fulfill his national conscription obligations in his homeland. All Finnish males must either serve six months in the military or perform 13 months of civil service before turning 29. Failure to do so results in imprisonment.
Rantanen told Adrian Dater of ColoradoHockeyNow.com that he is scheduled to begin his military option this summer. Fortunately, the service can be broken up into several stints, and the amount of time Rantanen will serve this summer, before reporting for Avs training camp in September, will depend on how far the Avs go in the playoffs.
