With the San Jose Sharks pretty much sealing their fate as a non-playoff team this season, attention is now turning to their star player Tomas Hertl.

According to NBC Sports' Sheng Peng, the Sharks are well in the hunt to keep the center. More information was also reported by Elliotte Friedman, who thinks that the team is legitimately trying.

They're making a run at it. I don't know how I would handicap it, Friedman said of the organization's efforts to re-sign Hertl. But they are definitely trying to get that done. Their efforts, from what I hear, are very legitimate.

As of right now, the 28-year-old is not even on the trade block, but that could change in the coming weeks if a deal is not completed. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, if the team cannot sign him by this weekend or Monday, the team may have to reevaluate his situation.

Hertl has had a decent season tallying 42 points (22 goals, 20 assists) in 56 games this season. If the Sharks were to trade Hertl, the return would likely be massive, but only time will tell what the front office decides to do.
