Arizona Coyotes forward Phil Kessel was in Detroit Wednesday night to help his team against the Red Wings, but it didn't last long. Immediately after taking his first shift, Kessel left the arena and jumped on a charter flight back to Phoenix to ensure he doesn't miss the birth of his child.

"Coyotes announce Phil Kessel will not return to tonight's game vs. the Red Wings. 'He is returning to Arizona for the birth of his child,' the team said.

"Congratulations to the Kessel family! And the consecutive games played streak continues.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, it was the Coyotes that ensured a private flight was on standby so Kessel could leave whenever he wanted.

"The Coyotes set up a charter flight, allowing Kessel to return to Phoenix for this important life event."

A lot of things have been said regarding the Arizona Coyotes organization over the past few years, much of them deserved. This is a pretty awesome gesture, though. Kessel is currently third on the NHL's All-Time Most Consecutive Games list with 956. He's behind Doug Jarvis with 964, and Keith Yandle, who's at 977.

Kessel's significant other is Sandra Pereira.
