Group of Russian NHLers considered joint statement on war, couldn't agree on message
Russians playing in the NHL have had little to say about their home country's invasion of Ukraine since rockets started flying. Most have chosen to remain quiet, whether over fear of reprisal or something else. A new report states several Russian NHLers had recently considered a joint statement, but couldn't agree on the message.
It's safe to say that unless a statement severely condemns the actions of Russian president Vladimir Putin, it would be widely criticized. At the same time, we have no way of knowing whether every Russian playing in the NHL is actually against these actions. While many Russians have been arrested for protesting the war, several others have been supportive since day one. Russian athlete Ivan Kuliak is facing potential disciplinary action after wearing a "Z" on his chest during a gymnastics competition in Qatar (Apparatus World Cup). The Z has become Russia's adopted symbol for support of the Ukraine invasion and is being displayed by the country's soldiers, as well as many civilians. Russia has also enacted a new law that could mean jail time for any Russian caught spreading "fake news" about the invasion.
