Alex Ovechkin reveals who will replace him as captain of the Capitals

The Washington Capitals have had a fantastic leader for a long time now, and when Alex Ovechkin retires, he has a certain successor in mind.

It appears as though Alex Ovechkin still has some gas left in the tank for the Washington Capitals as he chases Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record, but after two decades in Washington, he knows that the end is near. With that in mind, after the Capitals were swept by the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he offered his choice in the player that should replace him as the captain of the Washington Capitals.

Alex Ovechkin said himself today that Tom Wilson is likely the next captain.

Despite being 30-years old, Wilson is the ideal replacement for Ovechkin, as he has been a key part of the organization for the past decade, with no young names coming through the team ready to take the reigns as a leader. It's not clear yet when Ovechkin will contemplate officially retiring, but as he nears 40, his career can't stretch on in Washington for much longer.

It's no secret that Wilson is one of the most hated players in the NHL, but in Washington, especially by his teammates he is beloved, and after inking a long-term extension this past summer, he makes sense as the next Washington Capitals captain.
