However, big changes would be on the horizon in the off-season. During which time, the Rangers would add some big names to their roster, including the signings of super star forward Artemi Panarin and defensive powerhouse, Jacob Trouba.
The Rangers would also find some great luck in winning the second overall draft pick for the 2019 NHL draft. Making no mistake, the Rangers used this opportunity to select a young Finnish forward with a knack for finding the net, and one of the fastest growing names in the hockey world, 18-year-old Kaapo Kakko.
The young forward would inevitably sign a 3 year, entry-level contract with the New York Rangers on July 11, 2019. He was immediately welcomed to New York with open arms. So much so, in fact, that Madison Square Garden sold out of his number 24 jersey on the night of the Rangers home opener. When the young star learned that not everyone who wanted his jersey was able to snag one before they flew off the shelves, he jumped into action.
On Oct. 10th, Kakko hit the streets of New York with one singular purpose, to hand deliver his jersey to a fan that missed out on opening night.
On Opening Night, Kakko's jerseys sold out so quickly that not every fan was able to snag one.
So today, Kakko himself decided to surprise one lucky fan with one of his own. Stay tuned for 📹. pic.twitter.com/MQ98EDROjU— New York Rangers (@NYRangers) October 10, 2019
After some quality time with this lucky fan, the young Rangers forward would retreat to prepare for their next game. The following day, Kakko would score his first NHL goal against the Edmonton Oilers. This would make the rookie forward only the 8th player in New York Rangers history to score at age 18 or younger.
The first of many. ⭐

His actions both on and off the ice show that the young forward is feeling right at home. From the warm welcome from New Yorkers everywhere, to Kakko's reaction to it, it's pretty clear that this is a good fit. Undoubtedly, the newest addition to the Rangers top line seeks to establish himself as a leader within this organization.
One thing's for sure, it's a name hockey fans everywhere will not soon forget -- Kaapo Kakko.
