The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed Evgeni Malkin on LTIR to remain cap compliant, prior to Adam Johnson's call up on Wednesday evening. Johnson was called up to replace Alex Galchenyuk, who was officially placed on injured reserve. With the move, the Pens have opened up $9.5M in additional cap space. Talk about using a shovel to swat a fly.

While we're on the topic of the Pens, winger Patric Hornqvist was on the ice for the Pens' morning skate. This doesn't necessarily indicate a return to game action, but it is an encouraging sign that he may not miss much time.

For the first time in franchise history (which is a lengthy one) the Montreal Canadiens have seen their first three games of the season go to overtime. The Habs are 1-0-2 so far.

Speaking of the Habs, forward Nate Thompson is now fourth all-time for games played among players from Alaska. Scott Gomez is first, then Brandon Dubinsky, followed by Matt Carle.

Carolina Hurricanes forward, Jordan Martinook, is expected to miss the next 2 months after undergoing surgery to repair an injury to a core muscle. Martinook has recorded one assist through 4 games with the Canes this season.

It appears both Toronto head coach Mike Babcock and Jon Cooper of Tampa Bay are expecting a lot of offensive power in tonight's match-up between the two team. Both are joking that they may need more than one puck on the ice.

The Leafs have confirmed Jason Spezza, Justin Holl and Nic Petan will all play against Tampa Thursday night. It will be the first consecutive games this season for the trio.

Both the Sharks' Jonny Brodzinski and Montreal's Michael McCarron have cleared waivers. Both will report to their respective AHL teams.

Victor Rask and Nick Seeler will be healthy scratches for the Minnesota Wild tonight as they face the Winnipeg Jets.

The Chicago Blackhawks have activated defenseman Connor Murphy from injury reserve. He has been dealing with a groin injury.
