Vittorio Mancini has one more season to prove he belongs with the Vancouver Canucks, and the countdown is already on.
This offseason, expectations landed squarely on Mancini's shoulders after a journey that's included two unclaimed draft years and one blockbuster trade in his name.
He arrived from the Rangers back in January 2025, part of a package that also included Filip Chytil and a first-round pick, in exchange for JT Miller.
Since landing in Vancouver, the momentum has stalled. Mancini logged only 24 games with the Canucks last season, averaging 13:44 a night in a clear fill-in role.
He finished with 3 points and a minus-12 rating over those 24 games, a modest return for a player once viewed as a package centrepiece.
The clearest path forward runs through Luke Schenn. At 36, Schenn is aging out of everyday minutes, and Mancini needs to start beating him out regularly.
Why the JT Miller trade pieces still matter here
Schenn managed just 7 points over 50 games last season at a minus-12 rating, numbers that suggest the door is open if Mancini can actually push through it.
The bigger bar sits with the rest of the return from that trade. Chytil posted 3 points in 12 injury-shortened games, a low target Mancini could clear by default.
Drew O'Connor is the tougher measuring stick, putting up 29 points over a full 82 games last season as a steady middle-six piece up front.
Matching O'Connor's impact from the back end would be a real signal that Vancouver didn't just add complementary pieces in that Miller deal, it added a real player.
Mancini still has waiver-exempt status until he plays 15 more NHL games, so there's real risk of a third stint in Abbotsford if this doesn't click fast.
Whether Mancini finally locks down that regular NHL role, or spends another year bouncing between the press box and the AHL, is the real question hanging over his season.
Will Vittorio Mancini finally lock down a full-time NHL role with the Canucks this season?
