On Wednesday during his media availability, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was asked about the possibility of his team signing free agent forward Evander Kane.

"Right now, it's all speculation," McDavid said. "Obviously, Evander is an amazing player and he's had lots of success over the last couple of years. Whatever else is going on, it's not something I look into much."

"I think Evander is a great player and can help us a lot on the ice and that's first and foremost," he added.

Kane became a free agent after clearing unconditional waivers on Sunday afternoon. Oilers general manager Ken Holland confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that he has spoken with Kane's agent, Dan Milstein.

Even though he's a free agent, Kane is not expected to sign anywhere soon given that the NHL has informed teams that they are investigating him for crossing the border from the United States into Canada last month, eight days after testing positive for COVID-19.

"I'm not really here to discuss optics issues," McDavid said, "If fans don't like it and media doesn't like it, I think it is what it is. I think there are a lot of things that go on the ice and whatnot that fans don't like and we don't necessarily have to discuss that up here with you guys."

Kane, 30, would be a good addition to the Oilers purely looking at what he is capable of doing on the ice. He's scored twenty or more goals in six consecutive seasons and led the Sharks in goals (22) and points (49) during the 2020-21 season.
