Alex Tuch gives Spencer Carbery a major win-now weapon, but Washington's 8-year commitment is already one of summer's biggest bets.

The Capitals acquired Tuch through a sign-and-trade after Buffalo couldn't reach an agreement with the winger, then committed $10,500,000 per season to him.

The concern is mostly about the back end of the contract. Tuch is already 30 and will be 38 when the agreement expires, putting Washington firmly in win-now territory.

That doesn't mean the move can't work. Carbery gets another proven top-six forward for a roster trying to maximize its current competitive window rather than protect flexibility years from now.

Toronto made a similarly aggressive bet on Darren Raddysh. The Maple Leafs handed the defenseman an 8-year contract carrying an $8,500,000 annual cap hit after acquiring him from Tampa Bay.

Raddysh is also 30, and the fact the Lightning were willing to move him within the Atlantic Division adds another layer to the Leafs' gamble.

3 NHL contracts that are already starting to look dangerous

Chicago went even bigger with Bowen Byram, signing the defenseman for 6 years at $12,500,000 per season as the Blackhawks searched for a true No. 1 option.

Byram's risk is different from Tuch's and Raddysh's. Age isn't the primary concern; it's whether his previous role accurately predicts how he will handle being the main defenseman on a new blue line.

He spent time behind Cale Makar in Colorado and Rasmus Dahlin in Buffalo, two defenders who absorbed major matchups and allowed Byram to operate without carrying every top-pair responsibility.

Chicago is now paying him as the player expected to handle those assignments himself. If he succeeds, the Blackhawks may have secured a cornerstone beside Connor Bedard's rising core.

Toronto's calculation is just as aggressive. Auston Matthews' current contract runs through 2027-28, giving the Leafs clear incentive to spend heavily on pieces they believe can help immediately.

Washington is following the same logic with Tuch. The late years may become uncomfortable, but Carbery's club is betting the early years are worth that future risk.

All 3 contracts could look smart if the players deliver during their teams' competitive windows. The danger is obvious too: long term, major cap hits and very little room for error if performance drops.
