Bobby Ryan returning to action in upcoming Spengler Cup

After being released from his professional tryout with the Detroit Red Wings back in mid-October, Bobby Ryan has finally found a new home, at least temporarily.

Ryan will play for the Bern Select Team at the 2021 Spengler Cup, which is set to get underway on Sunday, December 26th.

The Bern Select Team was announced by tournament organizers yesterday after Team Canada and HC Ambri-Piotta pulled out of this year's edition citing COVID-19 concerns. The Bern Select Team will be comprised of players from SC Bern, EHC Biel, and the SCL Tigers.

Along with Bobby Ryan, former NHLers Christian Thomas, Lauri Korpikoski, Phil Varone, and Alexandre Grenier will play for the Bern Select Team.

With NHLers not going to the upcoming Winter Olympics, pending an official announcement, Bobby Ryan expressed his interest in playing for the United States once again, after playing for them as a 22-year-old in 2010. But he also has concerns about the quarantine period for players who test positive while in China.

"For me, I would definitely be interested. I would absolutely throw my name in the hat and see if there was interest from Team USA. If there was, I would have to do the same due diligence that the NHL guys are doing because I have two young kids at home," Ryan said during an appearance on 'The Athletic Hockey Show'.

He added, "I'm not in a rush to jump in and be told that a) you're gonna have a five-week quarantine, and (that) if you test positive you're already in 10-day quarantine, just to get there. So there's a lot of moving parts. Ask me again in 10 days, I guess, and we'll go from there."

The Cherry Hill, New Jersey native has appeared in 866 career NHL games, where he's tallied 569 points (261 G, 308 A). If he decides to go to the Olympics, his veteran experience would be extremely valuable to the Untied States' roster.
