Team USA has selected their three goaltenders for the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China this February, and there's one rather surprising omission.
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell has been one of the league's top goaltenders in 2021-22, leading the NHL in wins with 15 and ranking within the top 5 in all other major goaltending metrics.
While Campbell has been absolutely stellar since last season, Team USA GM Bill Guerin has elected to go with Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck, Anaheim's John Gibson and Vancouver's Thatcher Demko as his trio, should the NHL players attend the Olympics.
Those three names are certainly ones that you can't thumb your nose at, but with Campbell playing at the level that he is right now, it is a bit surprising that he was not considered for at least that number 3 spot.
I suspect that the primary reason that Campbell did not make the cut is that the 29-year-old does not have a lengthy history as a number one goaltender in the NHL. In fact, Campbell has not yet played a full season as a starting goaltender.
Still, it seems a bit odd that Bill Guerin passed over the Leafs' netminder, despite the fact that he leads all American-born goalies in every major category.
Campbell is 15-5-2 this season, boasting a 1.94 GAA and a .937 save percentage with 3 shutouts.
