David Pagnotta of DFO just said the Simon Edvinsson trade talk between the Red Wings and Sharks has picked up steam.

The rumor has been around for days. Our own coverage of Pierre LeBrun's Sharks and Edvinsson report on Monday had San Jose seeing the Detroit defenseman as a great fit, and now there's another insider saying the interest is real.

Pagnotta, in a post relayed by RinkyReport, said the talk has been "percolating" for the last 7 or 8 days, give or take, and that it has "really picked up steam."

The post also says that, depending who you talk to, Detroit asked for Michael Misa. The text cuts off before the other side of that story is told, so what San Jose's version says is still unknown.

Edvinsson is listed on injured reserve with a contract dispute, out indefinitely, and he hasn't played a game this season. Over his NHL career he has 175 games and 60 points, and he was drafted sixth overall by Detroit in 2021.

Misa is the other half of the equation. The 19-year-old went second overall in 2025 and has 8 points in 16 games this season for a Sharks team that sits at 7-8-1.

Detroit is 7-6-3 after a 4-2 loss in Tampa on Tuesday. Todd McLellan's group has given up 50 goals, two more than it has scored, so the appeal of fixing the blue line is easy to see. But a defenseman who isn't in the lineup doesn't help anyone right now.

Why Misa for Edvinsson makes little sense for San Jose

The Sharks have a goal differential of -14 and have scored 42 goals, which is not a team with scoring to spare. Moving a former second overall pick who is still learning the league, for a defenseman stuck in a contract dispute, would be a bad trade for Mike Grier.

Detroit's side is more straightforward. Shawn Horcoff gets to ask for a prized young forward, and as Darren Dreger's Misa "plus, maybe plus" comment showed Wednesday, the price may not stop at one name.

Earlier, our report on Dreger on the Red Wings wanting more than Misa framed the same gap. Each camp seems to know what the other is holding, and neither has blinked.

The Red Wings host Vegas tonight, and the Sharks are in Minnesota on Friday. Edvinsson's contract dispute and his place on injured reserve still have to be sorted out before any deal could happen.
