Pierre LeBrun says the Sharks think Simon Edvinsson would be a great fit, and Detroit knows what San Jose has up front.

The Red Wings defenseman hasn't played a game this season. He's listed on injured reserve with a contract dispute, out indefinitely, which is why every call around the league feels louder than it should.

The Sharks have been in this from the start. We reported Simon Edvinsson trade rumors intensifying after a Sharks offer was rejected on Friday, when Detroit reportedly turned down a strong proposal after substantive talks.

Edvinsson is 23, went sixth overall in 2021, and already has 175 NHL games behind him. He has 60 points over his career and a +17 rating, numbers that explain why teams keep asking.

LeBrun's point, passed along by NHL Rumour Report from his Insider Trading column on October 27, is that Detroit would find some pretty intriguing options up front if it looked at San Jose's roster.

Why Detroit would shop in San Jose

The caveat is the obvious one. Macklin Celebrini isn't part of the conversation, and he's put up 16 points in 13 games this season. LeBrun spoke of other interesting targets, but he didn't name them.

San Jose needs help on the back end, and the standings show it. The Sharks are 7-7-1 with a -12 goal differential, and they've allowed 53 goals. They were playing Calgary tonight as this was written.

Detroit sits in a different spot. The Red Wings beat the Panthers 5-3 in Florida tonight to move to 7-5-3, so GM Shawn Horcoff and coach Todd McLellan aren't dealing with a team in free fall.

That doesn't make the standoff easier to defend. A top-pairing-caliber defenseman who is sitting on IR over a contract dispute is a problem that grows with every game, and the Sharks aren't the only team knocking. The Maple Leafs joining the Simon Edvinsson chase made that clear on Monday.

Detroit plays at Tampa Bay on Tuesday and the Sharks visit Los Angeles on Wednesday. Edvinsson's status remains the same on both nights.
