Capitals defenseman Vincent Desharnais needs to have his appendix removed, and Spencer Carbery said nobody saw it coming.

“Totally out of the blue, no symptoms, just all of a sudden needs to get his appendix removed. That's unfortunate,” Carbery said, via Tarik El-Bashir.

“It sucks; he was playing really well. But it happens.”

Carbery is right about that last part. The defenseman was quietly having a strong start, and the numbers back it up.

It's like the check-engine light coming on halfway through a perfect road trip. Nothing was wrong, until suddenly everything was.

Desharnais has a +9 rating on a $4,200,000 cap hit.

He also has 3 assists through nine games.
