Simon Edvinsson's holdout is pointing toward one exit, and a team that inquired about the Red Wings defenseman believes it ends in a trade.

David Pagnotta shared the detail Wednesday on the DFO Insider, after speaking with that team.

“They told me, this individual with this team, told me that they believe this will end in a trade,” Pagnotta said. “That's their belief.”

That same team doesn't believe it has enough to land him.

Call it 90 percent. When interested clubs are already planning around a trade, this holdout isn't heading toward a handshake in Detroit.

It's like a couple still sharing an apartment after the breakup. Everyone stays polite, but the moving boxes are already in the hallway.

Shawn Horcoff has said he isn't interested in trading Edvinsson, though he's engaged in talks with other clubs.

Shawn Horcoff's asking price is scaring off at least one suitor

The price is clearly steep. If a team calling about him doesn't think it has enough, Detroit is asking for a lot.

Chris Johnston reported the Red Wings want Moritz Seider's deal to act as a ceiling. Seider carries an $8,550,000 cap hit.

That's the standoff in a nutshell. The gap between what the holdout wants and what Detroit will pay its second-best defenseman hasn't closed.

Toronto is a name to watch. Detroit sent two scouts to the Leafs' game against San Jose on Monday.

The Leafs are hunting a top-four defenseman and are willing to move the Colorado first-round pick they hold next year.

Detroit sits at 3-3-3 and visits Vancouver on Thursday, the middle stop of its western road trip.

Horcoff is juggling this and the Dylan Larkin talks at the same time, with a President of Hockey Operations still to be hired above him.

So who blinks? If that team is right, the next Edvinsson headline will be about where he lands, not what he signs.
