Morgan Rielly's name is back in Toronto Maple Leafs trade chatter heading into tonight's game in Colorado.
The timing isn't random. Toronto dropped a 4-3 shootout loss in Vegas on Thursday, handing the Golden Knights their third straight win.
Then the report landed. The Athletic's James Mirtle suggested the Leafs could chase another top-four defenceman this season and might revisit Rielly's situation if things start sliding.
Nobody in Toronto has confirmed talks. But rumours like this don't crawl back five games into a season by accident.
The standings explain the nerves. Toronto sits 2-2-1 with a minus-1 goal differential.
That's good for 19th overall and fifth in the Atlantic, already chasing in a division that doesn't wait for anybody.
And the blue line is where the eyes go first. Rielly has three assists, no goals and a -2 rating so far.
The $7.5 million question hanging over Toronto's blue line
The 32-year-old carries a $7.5 million cap hit. Darren Raddysh is the only Toronto defenceman paid more, at $8.5 million.
And Raddysh hasn't earned that premium either, going minus-3 with two assists. The issues on this back end run deeper than one contract.
The steadier numbers belong to Chris Tanev and Jake McCabe. Both are plus-2, doing the quiet defensive work Rielly was never really built for.
His game lives on the first pass and the power play. One power-play assist so far is a thin return from a puck mover at that price.
Moving him to fix this blue line is like firing the quarterback because the offensive line keeps getting beat. The sacks show up on his stat line, but the leak starts elsewhere.
Dealing him this early would be a panic move. Five games tells you almost nothing about a defenceman's season, and selling low is how teams lose trades they regret for years.
The depth chart isn't helping. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is day-to-day with an undisclosed issue, which thins the blue line before any trade even happens.
Up front, John Tavares is out for personal reasons until at least Oct. 13. That leaves Jim Hiller patching both ends of the lineup on a road trip.
Neither goalie has bailed anyone out. Anthony Stolarz sits at .904 and Sergei Bobrovsky at .906, with Bobrovsky still searching for his first win.
Tonight's test is Colorado, a team that has scored 23 goals in four games.
Jared Bednar's club just hung seven on Calgary on Thursday, and this is the first meeting between these teams this season.
So what happens if the Leafs get run out of the building?
The rumour gets louder, every shift Rielly takes gets picked apart, and the front office has to decide whether the problem is the player or the structure around him.
That call won't happen tonight. But the clock started in Vegas.
