Devils, Jack Hughes' camp hold contract extension talks
New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes is in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract and is set to become a restricted free agent in July 2022.
According to Pierre LeBrun, the Devils and Hughes' agent Pat Brisson have held initial talks regarding an extension, but the expectation is that this could take a while to get done.
"There have been some initial conversations between the Devils, and they were initiated by the Devils, and Jack Hughes' led by Pat Brisson of CAA. This one's an interesting one because on the one hand, I think the Devils would love to do what Montreal did with Nick Suzuki, a young player with a year left on his entry-level deal, and sign him ahead of time. In Jack Hughes' case, I think the Devils, for sure, are probably saying let's sign this young franchise player before he really pops this year. He's not had that huge year yet, but you feel that it's coming here. That's why I think Pat Brisson and CAA are going to say what's the hurry, for sure they're going to get him signed but does it have to be right away, this could take a while," LeBrun said on Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN.
Hughes, 20, was selected first overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He's played in 119 career games for the New Jersey Devils, tallying 55 points (20 G, 35 A), 26 penalty minutes, and is a -27.
Unfortunately for the Devils, Hughes was injured during Tuesday night's win against the Seattle Kraken. He left the game and did not return, with head coach Lindy Ruff saying that Hughes is currently day-to-day and his availability for Thursday's game against Washington is in doubt.
"He'll be evaluated (Wednesday) and we'll see where he's at," Ruff said. "I watched the hit. I don't like the way he fell. The hit itself, I couldn't find a lot to criticize. But when he went down, I've had my share of shoulder injuries, I know that when you stick your arm out something bad could happen sometimes."
