The Detroit Red Wings are more open to a futures package for Simon Edvinsson than they are in a Dylan Larkin trade.

Frank Seravalli reported it, as relayed by IceMetrix, listing prospects, draft picks or young roster players as the kind of return Detroit would consider.

Edvinsson reportedly prefers a trade over an extension, per Elliotte Friedman, and his camp isn't talking with the Red Wings.

That split makes sense. Moving Larkin leaves a hole that has to be filled right away, while an Edvinsson deal can be about the long game.

It's selling your daily driver versus the project car in the garage. One needs a replacement in the driveway tomorrow, the other can wait.

Who's buying? Jeff Marek has floated Carolina and Boston as possible offer sheet teams for the defenseman.

Boston has also been looking for a top-four defenseman since missing on Rasmus Andersson, per Marek.

The Red Wings may be willing to trade Simon Edvinsson, but Dylan Larkin is apparently untouchable

For him, Friedman has said Detroit wants players it can use right away.

Larkin named Florida, Vegas and Minnesota in June, and Friedman later linked the Panthers and Eetu Luostarinen to his situation.

He hasn't dressed in either of Detroit's first two games, and Todd McLellan said he has to live with the ramifications of asking for a trade.

The Red Wings are 0-2-0 after a 3-2 loss to Winnipeg on Sunday, and they host Ottawa tonight.

Moritz Seider carries the biggest cap hit on the blue line at $8,550,000.

Axel Sandin Pellikka, 21, and Anton Johansson, 22, have both dressed in each game.

Ben Chiarot is 35 and Justin Faulk is 34, which makes the youth on that blue line matter even more.

Florida's interest is worth watching, with Aleksander Barkov now expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Edvinsson's restricted free agent status also gives Detroit some control over the timing of his deal.

Detroit has two very different negotiations running at once. Whichever one moves first will tell everybody what the Red Wings really think of this season.
