The Toronto Maple Leafs placed Max Domi on LTIR this afternoon, freeing his $3.75M cap hit hours before tonight's home game against the Islanders.
The timing isn't subtle. Toronto opened the season Tuesday night with a 3-2 loss to the Canadiens, and Domi did not dress.
What's keeping him out isn't the story yet. The math is.
Toronto's projected cap hit for 2026-27 reads $108,692,882. That leaves the Leafs $4,692,882 in the red on paper, a number no front office wants hanging around in October.
LTIR is how they climb out of that hole. With Domi's number parked, the Leafs now show positive cap space instead of a deficit.
It's the hockey version of finding a paycheque in last winter's coat. The money was technically always there. You just couldn't spend it.
The active roster now sits at 22 players out of a possible 23. That open spot is where this gets interesting.
Leafs buy breathing room as Domi's contract ages badly
Domi's last full season was rough. He went minus-29 across 80 games, the worst rating he's posted career-wise.
He added 12 goals and 36 points. With a deal running through 2027-28, that's a hard profile to sell to anybody.
Here's the blunt part. That contract aged badly, and LTIR is the kindest relief valve this front office could have asked for.
It's a long way from the 72-point season the Winnipeg native put up in Montreal back in 2018-19.
And Toronto needs any relief it can find. The Leafs sit 30th overall and eighth in the division after one game.
One game is noise. But noise in this market gets loud fast, and nobody in that locker room needs a reminder.
William Nylander scored both Toronto goals Tuesday. Auston Matthews was held without a point and went minus-1.
Sergei Bobrovsky posted an .875 save percentage in the opener, which won't hold up on most nights.
Gavin McKenna, all of 18, finished minus-2. Jim Hiller, hired in June, now has some cap flexibility to go with his first real headache.
So where does help come from? Toronto has no third-round pick in 2027, and no first-rounder or third-rounder in 2028.
The Islanders visit at 7:30 tonight with a 23rd roster spot sitting empty. Who fills it, and how long Domi stays parked, are questions still hanging over the bench.
