Winnipeg wants a goaltender in return for Connor Hellebuyck. The problem is the goaltender they'd want most might have already blocked them.
Elliotte Friedman believes Buffalo's Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has Winnipeg on his five-team no-trade list.
That detail hasn't been confirmed publicly by Luukkonen or the Sabres, so it's reported information rather than an established fact right now.
But if true, it changes everything about the cleanest version of a Hellebuyck-to-Buffalo trade.
Hellebuyck posted an .895 save percentage across 57 games last season, going 23-23-11, numbers that fell well below his career standards.
This deal actually traces back to the draft, when Winnipeg and Buffalo clashed over first-round picks. Winnipeg wanted Buffalo's No. 4 selection while keeping its own No. 8. Buffalo wanted the opposite.
That disagreement is part of why this trade never got finished then, and Winnipeg ended up drafting Viggo Bjorck while Buffalo kept its pick and took Daxon Rudolph.
Why the cap math still barely works either way
Buffalo currently projects around $4,160,000 in cap space. Luukkonen carries a $4,750,000 hit, while Hellebuyck sits at $8,500,000.
If Luukkonen's money leaves and Hellebuyck's money arrives, Buffalo is left with roughly $408,000 in space. Extremely tight, but workable on paper.
Without UPL in the deal, Buffalo needs an entirely different way to create cap room while still giving Winnipeg the kind of NHL-ready return GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has publicly demanded.
Cheveldayoff made clear after Hellebuyck's suspension that Winnipeg isn't rushing into a bad deal just to end the situation.
Buffalo finished 50-23-9 for 109 points last season, fourth overall, and won the Atlantic Division, meaning GM Jarmo Kekäläinen doesn't have to solve Winnipeg's problem out of desperation.
Luukkonen posted a .908 save percentage across 35 games last season, meaningful value at just 27 years old, giving Buffalo real leverage to wait this out rather than overpay.
If Luukkonen really has blocked this specific deal, both front offices may be headed back to the drawing board entirely.
