Connor Hellebuyck just forced Winnipeg's hand, and now the Jets have made it official.
The team announced Wednesday that Hellebuyck has been suspended for failing to report to training camp on time.
Elliotte Friedman reported that Hellebuyck had informed Winnipeg in advance he wouldn't attend, and the team gave him until Wednesday afternoon to show up anyway.
He didn't. The suspension followed almost immediately after that deadline passed.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media Thursday morning, the first real chance for Winnipeg's front office to explain where this goes from here.
Hellebuyck posted an .895 save percentage across 57 games last season, going 18-23-8 for a Jets team that finished 35-35-12.
His trade request became public back in August, and the search for a suitor has reportedly produced offers Winnipeg considers far below what a three-time Vezina winner should command.
Why this suspension changes the leverage completely
A suspension is a much bigger escalation than quiet trade talks dragging through the summer. This forces Winnipeg to either move quickly or manage a very public standoff with its franchise goaltender.
