Referee Chris Lee has retired from the NHL, and word spread fast Wednesday night through a Canadiens focused fan account.
The account HabsOnReddit posted the news just before 6 PM, and it had already pulled in more than 10,600 views within hours.
Lee wasn't the only one walking away. Referee Steve Kozari also retired, according to a quote included in that same post from the account Scouting The Refs.
Three linespersons are gone too. Steve Barton, Brad Kovachik, and Bryan Pancich all stepped away, confirmed in that same thread.
That's five full time officiating jobs open around the league in one stretch. Five. Not two, not three.
For a league that's constantly fielding complaints about consistency on calls, losing that much experience in one swing matters.
Replacing five full timers isn't like swapping out a bottom six winger. It's closer to losing five air traffic controllers in the same week. The system keeps running, but everybody watches closer for mistakes.
