An unexpected development has put the Maple Leafs' short-term plans in a new light

Patriks Plumins closed out the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect tournament the same way he opened eyes all weekend, standing on his head when it mattered most.

Toronto's prospects beat the Winnipeg Jets 6-4 to wrap up the 2026 NHL Prospect Challenge in Gatineau.

Marlies head coach Steve Sullivan didn't hold back on what Plumins brought to the win.

"We were outshot today, and he was a big reason why we came away with the win," Sullivan said. "He made some really big saves, especially near the end."

Winnipeg pushed hard over the final five or six minutes, and Plumins closed the door every time.

"He's an aggressive goaltender who moves a lot, but he gives you a sense of calmness behind the bench," Sullivan said.

Sullivan pointed to a shift in tempo compared to the tournament opener, when penalty-heavy hockey disrupted any real flow for his group.

The blue-line prospect who's got Sullivan buzzing

Vinny Borgesi is the name generating real buzz on defense, and Sullivan didn't hide his enthusiasm.

"His elusiveness. He's really shifty, and he shows patience with the puck," Sullivan said. "He makes the opposition stressed when he is on the ice."

Borgesi's ability to walk the blue line and read the game made him difficult for Winnipeg to track all weekend.

Brody Pepoy also stepped up after nerves slowed the group in game one, elevating his game once the second matchup settled into more five-on-five hockey.

Tyler Hopkins remains the tougher puzzle. Sullivan likes everything about his game structurally but hasn't cracked how to turn his positioning into more points.

"How do we take him to the next level, and where does it translate into more points? I don't have the answer yet," Sullivan said.

Sullivan called the event one of the hardest of the year to coach, given the tight turnaround between games and the mountain of systems information dumped on players in 48 hours.

Whatever Toronto learned about this group in Gatineau, the real test comes once these same names try to translate it into an AHL season.
