John Klingberg's retirement closes the book after his final NHL season under San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky.
The Swedish defenseman officially announced Friday that he is retiring from professional hockey after 12 NHL seasons and exactly 700 regular-season games.
Klingberg entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent after finishing the 2025-26 campaign with San Jose. He appeared in 56 games for the Sharks, recording 10 goals and 17 assists.
No new contract followed during the 2026 free-agent period. Instead of extending his career with another organization, the 34-year-old has decided to step away.
That ends a run that included stops with the Dallas Stars, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and Sharks.

His best years came in Dallas, where Klingberg established himself as one of the NHL's most productive puck-moving defensemen and earned a major role on the Stars' blue line.

Klingberg's peak offensive season came in 2017-18. He produced 67 points while playing all 82 games, numbers that also earned him All-Star recognition.
Career-wise, Klingberg leaves the NHL with 92 goals and 351 assists. His ability to move the puck and create offense from the back end defined much of his prime.
The later stages of his career became far less stable. Klingberg played only 14 games for Toronto in 2023-24 before hip surgery ended his season.
He returned with Edmonton during the following campaign before landing in San Jose, where Warsofsky used him through what ultimately became his final NHL season.
His retirement also removes an experienced right-shot defenseman from the remaining free-agent market just as clubs prepare for training camp.
For Klingberg, there will be no late contract, professional tryout or another push for a roster spot. The decision is final, and 700 games will stand as his NHL total.
It closes a career that moved from top-pair offensive production in Dallas to injuries, short-term stops and one last season on the Sharks' blue line.
