Sidney Crosby has delivered a strong endorsement of Edmonton Oilers head coach Mike Babcock as debate around his NHL return continues.
Crosby knows Babcock from their time together with Team Canada, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins captain firsthand experience with the veteran coach's methods behind the bench.
His assessment stands out because Babcock's hiring in Edmonton has drawn heavy scrutiny following his brief and controversial stop with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023.
Crosby focused on the hockey side of the equation, describing Babcock as “really organized” and pointing directly toward his ability to control matchups.
He also praised Babcock's feel behind the bench, calling it “Really good bench management when it comes to matching lines.”
Those comments offer a much different picture from the criticism that has followed Babcock through several NHL stops.

The divide around Babcock has rarely been about his ability to coach. His systems, preparation and demanding style have long been part of his reputation.
The bigger issue has been how that approach lands inside the locker room, especially after former players publicly described difficult experiences playing for him.
That's why Crosby's backing carries weight. He isn't speaking from the outside. He played for Babcock in high-pressure international tournaments with elite talent filling the lineup.
Edmonton's stars also appear ready for a more demanding bench. Connor McDavid has indicated that the Oilers' top players wanted greater accountability, even when that means uncomfortable coaching decisions.
