Connor McDavid is facing heat after addressing Alex Formenton's arrival, giving Mike Babcock another storyline to manage before camp.

The Edmonton Oilers signed Formenton to a one-year, $850,000 contract Wednesday, bringing the 25-year-old forward back to the NHL after more than 4 years away.

McDavid was asked about the move during the NHL Media Tour in Las Vegas, and Edmonton's captain chose a measured response rather than distancing himself from the signing.

"Listen, I think he's gone through a process. He's been transparent through the process, and that process has led him here today, and it's a great opportunity for him."

McDavid said. He finished by describing Edmonton as a strong opportunity for Formenton.

That response quickly drew criticism online, adding another layer of attention to a signing that was already certain to generate questions around the Oilers.

Formenton had not played in the NHL since April 2022. He was later charged in connection with the 2018 World Juniors case and was acquitted in court.

Edmonton now faces questions beyond the lineup

From a hockey standpoint, Formenton brings NHL experience. In his final season with the Ottawa Senators, he recorded 18 goals and 32 points across 79 games.

But Edmonton's decision guarantees that his performance won't be the only focus once training camp opens. Every roster decision involving Formenton could draw attention beyond his role in the bottom six.

That puts McDavid in an uncomfortable position as captain. Questions surrounding the move are unlikely to disappear simply because puck drop gets closer.

Babcock will also have to handle that attention inside the locker room. Edmonton officially hired him as head coach on June 23, giving him responsibility for managing both the lineup and the noise surrounding it.

The Oilers clearly believe Formenton can help them on the ice at a low cap number. The bigger test will be how the organization handles everything attached to his return.

And McDavid's first public comments have already shown just how closely every answer will be examined.
