Dylan Larkin and the Dallas Stars are quietly becoming a real trade fit again.
Bleacher Report named the Red Wings captain on September 8th as a player who could still move before camps open next week.
There's no fresh report saying Detroit and Dallas are currently negotiating. But Dallas reportedly sits on Larkin's approved trade list.
That list matters more now than it did earlier this summer, especially with one specific name reentering the conversation.
Jason Robertson just signed a one-year, $12 million contract, and that deal changes the entire math on a potential framework.
Detroit previously asked Dallas about Wyatt Johnston in talks that went nowhere. Dallas reportedly countered with Robertson instead.
Johnston put up 86 points last season on a contract running through 2029-30, exactly the kind of young cornerstone Dallas won't move.
Why Robertson's short deal makes him the real wild card
Robertson is coming off a 96-point season, arguably the better player right now, but his contract only runs one more year.
That term mismatch is the whole problem. Detroit would trade five years of cost certainty in Larkin for one year of Robertson.
Larkin put up 67 points in 74 games last season, still winning nearly 53 percent of his faceoffs at 30 years old.
He carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31, real term Dallas would be buying alongside Mikko Rantanen and Roope Hintz up front.
The cap math isn't simple either. Dallas currently sits about $1.36 million over the ceiling, with Detroit holding roughly $19.57 million in space.
Swapping Robertson's $12 million for Larkin's $8.7 million would actually improve Dallas's cap position by more than $3 million.
But Jim Nill has publicly called Robertson a cornerstone, so nothing here suggests Dallas is actively shopping him right now.
Detroit's front-office chaos adds another layer. Jeff Greenberg withdrew from the GM search on September 7th, leaving the job still open.
Steve Yzerman remains a senior adviser, but Detroit heads into camp with a captain requesting a trade and no permanent GM to actually make one.
Detroit has no reason to lower its price with five years left on Larkin's deal. The real pressure sits on Larkin expanding his short list of teams.
