Jeff Greenberg has turned down Detroit's top hockey job, leaving Todd McLellan's Red Wings facing another major offseason decision.
Greenberg officially withdrew from consideration for the Red Wings' head of hockey operations position Monday, removing one of the more unusual names connected to Detroit's search.
The 40-year-old is staying with the Detroit Tigers, where he serves as general manager. Greenberg made clear that his focus remains on completing the work he started on the baseball side of the Ilitch organization.
His candidacy carried more weight than a typical cross-sport connection. Greenberg spent the 2022-23 season as an associate general manager with the Chicago Blackhawks before returning to baseball.
That NHL experience, combined with his familiarity with Detroit ownership, made him a legitimate option instead of simply an outside-the-box interview.

Now Detroit's field gets smaller. And for an organization trying to change the direction of its hockey operation, losing a candidate already familiar with the ownership structure creates another complication.

Greenberg had also built momentum with the Tigers after taking over as GM in September 2023. His decision to remain in baseball closes the door on a move that would have immediately reshaped the Red Wings' front office.
Detroit already has plenty of pressure surrounding the organization. The Red Wings finished last season at 41-31-10 and missed the playoffs, extending a drought that has become impossible to ignore.
Todd McLellan remains behind the bench, but whoever controls the front office will inherit major roster decisions and expectations to push Detroit beyond simply hanging around the playoff race.
Dylan Larkin's future adds another layer. The captain scored 34 goals and finished with 67 points in 74 games last season, leaving Detroit with a major asset whose situation could shape the club's next direction.
Greenberg won't be the executive making those calls. His withdrawal forces Detroit to move deeper into its candidate list while one of the more intriguing options stays across town.
The Red Wings need their next front-office decision to create clarity quickly. With Greenberg officially out, attention now shifts to who remains willing to take control of a franchise facing heavy expectations.
